My favorite line from Being WEIRD: How Culture Shapes the Mind is ” Because of our peculiarly Western way of thinking of ourselves as independent of others, this idea of the culturally shaped mind doesn’t go down very easily.” I think of myself very independent because of my culture. In the United States we are portrayed as independent because of us as a country. We have an “American Mind” because we are Americans and grew up independent.

My favorite line in “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” is the first page because that page really caught my attention. I like how it caught my attention because I know many people relate to being at the dentist and they are moving their tongue a lot. It really was a good intro that led into the chapter. It was interesting of her to talk about her langueage.

I went to Texas State because I wanted to go to a certain college for nursing and I also wanted to get away. I’ve been wanting to do nursing since I was little and I wanted to be where the money was at and also do something that I enjoyed. Also I am a first generation college student so that’s another reason why I went to college because I wanted a college experience. I wanted to be something in life that’s why I came to Texas State and I never really knew anyone that came here because a lot of people from my school went to schools in Houston and I wanted to be far away. My siblings went to a community college. I’m the only sibling that went to an actual College.

My favorite part is when his friend was telling him to act like he was from somewhere he wasn’t. I like that part because he knew it was wrong, yet still went along with it. I thought it was funny when he decided to break the news and tell them he was  lying all along. It was funny because he changed his accent. It stood out to me because we all have that one friend who tells us to do bad things but its funny. I personally have a friend that wants me to do bad decisions but I usually wouldn’t do most of them.

People think my nephews are my kids because I take care of them so much. I tell them that they are my nephews, one is from my older sister and one is from my younger sister. They are the same age and don’t really look like each other but one does have similar features to me. My little sister has pictures of her baby in her room and pictures of her pregnant. My big sister has the same and also he lives with her.

In paragraph 3, I like when he said “But while I don’t believe our roots necessarily define us, I do believe there are racially inflected assumptions wired into…we confront. I agree with him on that because as he is racial stereotyped I can relate to them because as an African American we are racial stereotyped. Our roots and past don’t define who we are. People assume stuff about us and go along with it.
